The Danish Embassy in Pretoria is looking for a new Consular Officer
Position: Consular Officer
Type of employment: Permanent local contract with a three months probationary period
Starting date: 1 October 2025 or soonest thereafter

The Royal Danish Embassy is recruiting a pro-active, detail-oriented and outgoing consular officer. The officer needs to be able to communicate fluently in a Scandinavian language. You will be working under a team leader in a team of 3 employees.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Printing of Schengen visas, Schengen visa enquiries and expediting residence & work permit applications.
- Handling of passport applications and other document enquiries.
- Handling of certificates for Danish pensioners living in South Africa.
- Providing service and assistance to Danish citizens in need and handling of consular cases, including prison cases.
- Handling enquiries from Danish authorities in relation to regulation on citizenship, marriage, immigration, administration of estates and financial assistance.
- Updating contingency plans and the Embassy crisis management system.
- Updating the Embassy’s website.
- Miscellaneous tasks, e.g. within filing, data protection and other administrative task as well as Cultural Diplomacy as needed.
Besides these tasks, you are expected to be ready to contribute to handling Embassy tasks outside your own portfolio as needed. You will have the opportunity to learn the regulations and procedures from your colleagues and possibly through attending seminars and training in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Qualifications and experience
- A valid residence and working permit or be able to obtain such (Essential requirement).
- Command of one of the Scandinavian languages (Essential requirement).
- Excellent writing ability and verbal communication skills in English.
- A relevant educational background and preferably a minimum of 2 years work experience, preferably in public administration, business administration or similar.
- EU or EEA citizenship is considered an advantage.
- Experience with consular cases and/or visa-applications is an advantage.
Competencies and other requirements
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate good judgement and be able to work independently with a high sense of responsibility.
- Strong administrative competences and ability to quickly read and understand guidelines and procedures and apply these in casework.
- Ability to work as part of a team and have strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office packages and ability to adjust to new systems.
- A clean criminal record. Security clearance from Danish Police authorities will have to be obtained.

Employment conditions
- Permanent contract with a three-month probationary period. The contract will be based on relevant legally binding labour market rules of South Africa.
- Standard working hours of 37 hours with flexitime.
- 25 working days of paid holiday per full calendar year
- A basic salary in accordance with the Royal Danish Embassy Salary Policy with the possibility of additional allowances based on qualifications, relevant experience and proven work-related results in accordance with the Salary Policy.
- Health insurance covering standard level sickness expenses with the Embassy paying 80% of the insurance premium including a shared Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contribution.
- The position is subject to the terms of the rules of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs governing Mission Employed Staff as well as the Embassy Local Staff Rules, Organisational Manual and Code of Conduct.
