The Royal Danish Embassy in Pretoria is looking for a new colleague to join the political team.


The Political Officer will be working in the political team and report to the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy. Besides the Deputy Head of Mission, the political team also consists of a Senior Political Officer and a Danish intern. The political team drives the work to develop a strategic partnership with South Africa and is primarily responsible for the following activities:


  • Maintaining networks and diplomatic relations with the government of South Africa and to governments of side-accredited countries (Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe).
  • Analysing and reporting on the political and economic situation in South Africa and on key developments in side-accredited countries, including in support of the trade team.
  • Advancing cooperation with South Africa within the priority areas of human rights, democratic governance, gender equality, green transition, youth and peace and security.
  • Organizing ingoing and outgoing political and high-level visits.
  • Coordinating implementation of ‘SDG grants’ in support of key strategic goals of Denmark.


Main tasks and responsibilities

You will be assigned to contribute to the work of the political team. The specific division of responsibilities will be agreed once a candidate has been selected. You can expect, however, to be allocated primary responsibility for monitoring and reporting on political developments in a number of the Danish Embassy’s side-accredited countries and contributing to implementation of grants to civil society organizations, incl. financial management and reporting.


Required qualifications and experience

  • A Bachelor degree within social sciences or related fields relevant for political affairs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and be able to work independently, efficiently and in a trustful and respectful manner with partners.
  • Strong analytical skills of political and societal developments across Southern Africa.
  • A strong drive and ability to create positive changes as well as experience with project management
  • Excellent writing ability and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willingness and dedication to work on all types of assignments as needed in the daily work of the Embassy.
  • You must have SA nationality or be able to obtain valid residence and working permit.
  • A clean criminal record and obtain a Police Clearance Certificate from your residing country; the Danish Ministry will also perform a background check.  
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant working experience is considered an advantage

    Employment conditions

  • We offer a fixed term local contract until 31 December 2024 (with potentially longer-term employment after that). The contract will be based on the relevant legally binding labour market rules of South Africa.
  • You will be expected to work 37 hours per week.
  • You will be entitled to up to 25 working days of paid holiday per full calendar year.
  • Your basic monthly salary will be 36,500 ZAR with a possibility of earning extra allowances reflecting your qualifications, relevant experience and proven work-related results over time.
  • As part of your salary, you will also be added onto the Embassy’s medial aid covering standard level sickness expenses and full hospital cover with the Embassy paying 80% of the insurance premium including a shared UIF contribution.
