Are you our new colleague in the consular team?

The Embassy’s visa and consular team consists of three full time staff. We process and issue 3000-4000 Schengen visas per year, process 250 Danish passport applications, assist with 35 adoptions and attend to more than 10000 emails and phone calls.

We are responsible for crisis and contingency planning. We update the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ travel advice and we assist Danes in need 24/7 following accidents, imprisonment etc. We advise and assist our Honorary Consuls in Southern Africa and finally we attend to numerous requests from Danish state authorities in relation to regulation on citizenship, marriage, immigration, administration of estates and financial assistance.

…THEN THIS JOB DESCRIPTION MIGHT BE FOR YOU

We are looking a consular officer who can be caseworker on Schengen visas and Danish passport applications, handle enquiries from Danish authorities and provide service and assistance to Danish citizens in need. The contract will be limited to one year from the outset. Your main tasks will be:

  • Case processing of Schengen visas and expediting Residence & Work Applications. You will be trained to be first case officer and approver of visas.
  • Handling of passport applications and other document enquiries.
  • Handling of certificates for Danish pensioners living in South Africa.
  • Assist with service to Danes in need and handling of consular cases.
  • Updating contingency plans and our crisis management system.
  • Other consular tasks as needed.

You will of course have the opportunity to learn the regulations and procedures from your colleagues, the Team Leader and if possible attend seminars and training i Copenhagen.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • EU citizenship as approval of Schengen visas requires you to have EU, Swiss or Norwegian citizenship (Essential requirement).
  • Applicants must hold a valid residence and working permit (Essential requirement).
  • A relevant educational background for instance a Bachelor or Master’s degree in public administration, political science or similar or a relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s degree related to the components of the job description
  • Ability to read and understand Nordic languages an advantage. Excellent writing ability and verbal communication skills in English is essential.
  • A minimum of 3 years ofwork experience, preferably from public administration, business administration or similar
  • Experience with consular cases and/or visa-applications an advantage.
  • Applicants must have the ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate good judgement and be able to work independently.
  • Strong administrative competences and ability to quickly read and understand guidelines and procedures and apply these in casework.
  • Applicants must be able to work as part of a team and have strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office packages
  • The applicant must have a clean criminal record. Security clearance from Danish Police authorities will have to be obtained.

SALARY AND WORKING CONDITIONS

We can offer a package of approx. 300.000-360.000 ZAR p.a. plus benefits (pension, health insurance and UIF). You will be employed on a local contract with salary and working conditions regulated according to the Embassy’s “Local Salary Policy” and based on your experience and qualifications. We have a 37 hour working week, a friendly and informal working environment which provides opportunities to develop your competencies in an international environment. We offer a one year contract.
