The Embassy of Denmark in Pretoria is looking for a new staff member to cover activities within the trade area in South Africa and the region. The Senior Trade Officer is assigned to work primarily within the Trade Team and in close cooperation with the Head of Trade but also remain confident in working with other cross-cutting divisions at the Embassy. Job Description for the Senior Trade Officer position:

The Trade Council comprises all governmental activities designed to promote Danish export and foreign investment in Denmark under one roof. The Trade Council in Pretoria is based within the Embassy of Denmark. For more information see: http://sydafrika.um.dk/.

You will be assigned to work with trade activities in South Africa and when relevant in the region. A robust network within- and knowledge of the South African ministries as well as private sector experience is a strong advantage. The main key focus sectors of the Trade Council are water & wastewater management, renewables, health and food & agriculture. Working experience with one or more of these sectors is a requirement.

The Senior Trade Officer will have an annual income target, working on a consultancy basis for Danish companies. A high level of independency and drive is therefore needed to succeed in the position. You are responsible for reaching your targets; namely to formulate project ideas, secure engagement from Danish companies and to execute projects delivering strong value to the clients you are working with. You must therefore be in the possession of respectively strong sales, analytical and service skills.

A typical day in the life of the Trade Officer requires you to be able to;

• Provide assistance to Danish companies in promoting business-interests in the Sub-Saharan region - from quotation to assignment delivery, invoicing and follow-up.
• Market research, analysis of government tender processes, partner search, set-up of meeting programs, and facilitation of contact to relevant government entities.
• Prepare export promotion events, in relation to trade exhibitions, seminars, conferences, high level visits etc.
• Preparation of sector analysis in selected sectors such as energy, water, food and agriculture, health etc.
• Preparation of analytical reports on the economic and investment climate in the Southern Africa region.
• Planning and implementation of visits to Denmark to promote market opportunities in the Sub-Saharan region for Danish companies
• Prepare news for the Embassy's webpage, newsletters etc.
• Travels to markets in the Southern Africa region.
• Assisting other Danish Embassies in the Sub Sahara Africa region in commercial affairs.
• Any other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirement / Qualifications and Experience;

• A Master's degree in Economics or Business is preferable
• 5-10 years of relevant working experience, i.e. from a business environment in the private sector, with trade promotion, international economic cooperation or similar.
• Knowledge of Denmark and Danish companies is an advantage.
• Knowledge about the South African market and its economic development.
• Proficiency in English is a must
• Willingness to travel
• Excellent writing ability and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and be able to work independently and efficiently and be able to take initiatives.
• Applicants must also be able to work as part of a team, have strong analytical, problem-solving and networking skills, results-orientation, pro-activeness and work well under pressure.
• Applicants must have SA nationality or hold a valid residence and working permit.
• The applicant must have a clean criminal record and obtain a Police Clearance Certificates from your residing country; the Danish Ministry will also perform a background check.  
 
Starting salaries of R324.000 – R456.000, depending on experience and qualifications, plus benefits, a bonus scheme, a 37-hour working week, 25 annual leave days, a friendly and informal working environment that provides opportunities to develop your competencies in an international environment. We initially offer a 2 year contract.
